Barker Homes have enabled community members to enjoy independent living within their local community since 1970.
The non-for-profit currently runs 18 units designed to provide affordable housing options and that is set to grow by three thanks to the generosity of a local man.
Barkers of Baldina Cottages manager Shane Badman said the organisation had a vision in 2019 to utilise vacant land to build three new units but funding pressures ruled it out until Don Lloyd stepped up.
A significant financial contribution from Mr Lloyd got the project off the ground, with two of the units now close to completion and construction of a third looking a strong possibility.
“Don’s contribution has been a much needed boost to our finances. Due to his contribution, it is looking like we can afford to complete this project which will be a great asset to the Goyder region for many years to come,” Mr Badman said.
Mr Lloyd said he was interested in establishing a legacy within Burra for the Lloyd name.
“Lloyds have been in the area since 1906 but there’s now only one Lloyd connection left in the area,” he said.
“My four daughters were happy to provide funds to complete the units and to have a way of remembering the Lloyd name in Burra.
“The Barker Home system is very good for the older people, allowing them to stay longer in Burra and look after themselves. I have an older sister in the system at the moment.”
Barker Homes is a registered charity meaning donations can be claimed as tax deductions, and with tax time approaching Mr Badman is hopeful the community will rally to help raise the required $200,000 to complete the project.
“Demand remains high, as evidenced by our substantial waiting list,” Mr Badman said.
“The community’s support will help us provide better services for many years into the future.”
