More interest in woolly Merino lambs

SA LIVESTOCK EXCHANGE DUBLIN REPORT

Sheep – 2 June

Numbers eased this week as agents offered 4000 lambs and 1000 sheep. Quality was generally fair to average, however some ideally finished trade and heavy weight lambs were spread throughout the offering.

The usual trade and processor buyers were active along with specialty butchers, feeders and restockers. With a steady wool market restockers are showing more interest in woolly Merino lambs to shear and improve, and suitable drafts received better competition this week.

Lamb prices remained generally firm for type and condition, with a generally good quality mutton offering also selling to a firm trend.

Crossbred light stores sold from $158 to $216 as the better descriptions ranged from $230 to $240 per head. Trade weights sold from $250 to $260, heavy trades ranged from $292 to $325 as extreme heavy weights sold from $300 to $360 per head.

Light store Merinos sold from $148 to $160 as the better types ranged from $185 to $206 per head. Trade weights sold from $225 to $237, heavy trades ranged from $240 to $250 with the few extreme heavy weights selling from $292 to $325 per head.

Light mutton sold from $120 to $150, trade weights ranged from $180 to $200 with heavy weights fetching $230 to $275 per head.
